What happens when a MIT graduate certified in Blockchain combines traditional real estate with new technology? Powerhouse Vanessa Saunders expands her company with services that extend globally. Her company, Global Property Systems elevates real estate transactions using blockchain technology designed to put the client as first contact for any offers.
In the next few weeks, I’ll be interviewing Vanessa in preparation for the 2d International MLS Forum scheduled for October 6-7 in lovely Milan, Italy.

Reinventing Trust in Real Estate: Can Blockchain Be NAR’s Saving Grace?
By Vanessa Saunders, Founder and CEO, Global Property Systems
In the real estate world, trust is our currency. Yet, this currency is experiencing not just a decline but also a sort of inflation, particularly within the National Association of Realtors (NAR). This inflation, a crisis of confidence, is shaking the foundations of an organization that has long been the bedrock of real estate integrity. NAR is now embroiled in leadership instability and ethical controversies, including a sexual harassment scandal and landmark commission litigation, which have significantly tarnished its reputation. As Realtors who traditionally look to NAR for guidance, ethics, and accountability, we find ourselves in an era where these values are being questioned. What happens when the very bedrock of our professional integrity begins to falter? Could the answer to restoring and revaluing this depreciated trust lie in technology – specifically, blockchain? At Global Property Systems, we’re not just observing these challenges; we’re actively engaging in finding innovative solutions.
Blockchain – Not Just a Buzzword, But a Beacon of Trust
Blockchain in real estate is perceived by most to be all NFTs, Smart Contracts, and cryptocurrencies. But it offers so much more than that. It’s about bringing back the basics: transparency and trust. Imagine every transaction, every offer, every agreement, and every commitment being visible and verifiable. That’s blockchain in real estate.
We’ve already embraced these revolutionary ideas at Global Property Systems through our partnership with Propy.com. Utilizing their platform, albeit in a different way than initially intended, ensures that every transaction is crystal clear and tamper-proof, with all stakeholders notified in real time. Nothing is left to chance or human error. Our clients love this level of transparency and efficiency. But this initiative is bigger than just one company. It’s about an industry-wide shift, and NAR sits at the heart of this potential transformation, poised to lead the way in adopting these groundbreaking practices.
NAR’s Path to Rebuilding Trust
The trust issues plaguing NAR aren’t just surface scratches but deep wounds. Members question the value of their association, and the public scrutinizes the integrity of our profession. But here’s where blockchain can play a hero’s role. By integrating blockchain technology into its members’operations, NAR can take a significant step toward rebuilding trust.
This isn’t about Big Brother watching;
It’s about Big Ethics taking center stage: no more backroom dealings or hushed whispers of misconduct. With blockchain, every action is transparent, and every decision is visible – everything is out in the open, as it should be. This level of transparency has the power to revolutionize perceptions of NAR, turning skepticism into renewed confidence among members and the public alike. Moreover, this technology offers a significant security advantage, especially in handling our clients’ sensitive financial and personal information. In an era where such data is often vulnerable to hacking, blockchain provides much more protection, ensuring the safety and confidentiality that our clients rightfully expect.
More Than Just Membership – A Commitment to Integrity
Implementing blockchain goes beyond technology; it symbolizes a commitment to integrity. As Realtors, our membership with NAR should mean something profound. It should signify our dedication to ethical practices, transparency, and doing right by our clients. Blockchain can be the tool that reinforces these values and transforms our membership from a mere annual fee to a badge of honor.

I am excited to learn more about the use of blockchain for real estate transactions. I have been asking about this possibility for a few years and many in the industry (for obvious reasons) will not acknowledge or discuss. I know it’s expensive and complicated to code and create the blockchain, but it seems from what I understand, when it’s done the benefits are many. I am for the transparency and verifiable records that the blockchain can provide.
Ruth, I’m thrilled to see your excitement about blockchain in real estate! It’s definitely a game-changer. I’ve been diving deep into this space for quite some time and have found that the transparency and security it offers are just the tip of the iceberg.
You’re right—it can be a bit of a beast to set up, but once you’ve got it rolling, the benefits are incredible. I’ve used Propy.com extensively (probably more than most) for everything from standard transactions to more complex ones, and it’s been a lifesaver. If you’re curious to learn more, I’d highly recommend checking out their blockchain course—it’s a great way to get your feet wet and see the potential firsthand.
I know that not everyone in the industry is on board yet, but that’s starting to change as more people recognize how blockchain can protect and empower both buyers and sellers. It’s an exciting time to be in real estate, and I’m looking forward to seeing how you incorporate this technology into your own work!
Thank you Ruth. Vanessa has a full curriculum that makes it easier to understand. We will keep you posted when we feature her full interview.
Thanks, Terri! I’m feverishly working on an online course to help Realtors understand the power that blockchain can bring to their business. It’s not just about the tech—it’s about how it can really set you apart in the market. And the best part? Implementing it is more accessible and affordable than most people think. I’m excited to share more soon and see how it can be a game-changer for those who dive in!
Thanks to Vanessa and Terri. I am looking forward to learning more about blockchain to improve real estate transactions. And, I look forward to being able to understand well enough to teach the agents I work with and spread the word. Thanks again.
I viewed the online program Vanessa offered in one state. It’s a winner for an introductory look at blockchain and how it can act as a differentiator for brokers/agents!
