MLS Vendors need to know the difference between a “Site License” and a “Hunting License”
Saul’s 3 minute video at: Licensing Data in MLS.
As an MLS Executive, I am flooded with requests to view product demonstrations.
And, most vendors want an MLS to grant them a “Site License.” What makes more sense is a “Hunting License.”
Remember that for success, a product must be adopted. And keep in mind that the MLS budget process for 2026 is underway and that a technology vendor has a better chance of landing a contract with an MLS if it is doing its “selling” to the organization before the budget process is concluded.
Product Usage Cycle:
For any product to be successful, especially those purchased through a site license, the vendor needs a plan that addresses a continuous cycle:
Awareness: Making people aware of the product.
Adoption: Getting people to start using the product.
Reliance: Getting users to depend on the product.
Retention: Keeping users engaged with the product.
Referral: Users recommending the product, which feeds back into Awareness.
Vendor Responsibility: A vendor seeking a site license must have a program that takes the MLS or association through these steps and be ready to fund the necessary efforts to ensure high usage and value for the fee paid.
