The first I heard about Buyer Agency
When I was a young real estate attorney in Honolulu in the 1980s, a broker client informed me that he preferred working with buyers rather than listing sellers. He asked whether it was legal to represent buyers. At first I said NO, because the prevailing thinking back then was that everyone represented the seller, the person paying the commission. None of my research on agency law indicated otherwise.
It turns out that another young broker -– namely Saul Klein along with Bill Carey — was teaching a six-hour continuing education program in California, entitled “How To List Buyers.”

Saul led the buyer representation movement in California prior to becoming the President of the San Diego Association of REALTORS® in 1993. In 2024, Saul became the CEO of the San Diego MLS (SDMLS).

John Reilly, You and I first met when I travelled to Honolulu in the spring of 1995 to present a program on representing buyers. Prior to that, we had only met “online” in a mail list forum discussing representing buyers. You notified all of your real estate students that I was coming to town and the room was packed for the event…over 500 people at the Japanese Cultural Center. We had dinner with our wives Patty and Janie at the Pacific Club (Barbra Eden was dining there that evening as well, and you and I came up with the idea of “Online Publishing.” and the seeds of the Real Estate Electronic Publishing Company were sown. I was also consulting with NAR/RIN at the time and had lots to present on technology and the state of the industry…time flies 🙂

I remember first meeting you online. It was a few months after I finally bought my first computer. Up until then, I wrote all my books using a yellow legal pad and a #2 lead pencil…with help from my wife and a secretary, of course!
